Structured Abstract Requirements

Original research articles must include a concise and self-contained abstract that clearly presents the background or motivation, objective, methods or approach, principal results, and conclusions of the study. These elements should be clearly identifiable and presented in a logical sequence. Where structured subheadings are required for a particular article type, authors must use the prescribed format.

The abstract must not contain citations, references to figures or tables, or non-standard abbreviations that have not been defined. It should provide sufficient information for readers to understand the purpose, approach, principal findings, and significance of the work without consulting the main text.

Required Article-Level Declarations

Competing Interests

REQUIRED for ALL manuscripts.

All authors must declare any financial or non-financial competing interests that could reasonably be perceived as influencing the research, its conduct, interpretation, or publication.

Format (no competing interests):

“The authors declare that they have no competing interests relevant to this manuscript.”

Format (competing interests exist):

“[Author A.B.] has received [TYPE OF SUPPORT/FEES] from [ORGANIZATION]. [Author C.D.] has [NATURE OF COMPETING INTEREST, e.g., patent/patent application, consultancy, employment, or financial interest] related to [DESCRIPTION]. [Author E.F.] declares no competing interests.”

Authors should refer to the journal's Conflicts of Interest / Competing Interests Policy (Section B4) for further requirements.

Funding

REQUIRED for ALL manuscripts.

Authors must disclose all sources of financial support relevant to the research and preparation of the publication, including institutional, governmental, commercial, and non-profit funding. Where applicable, authors should provide the full name of the funding organisation and the grant or project number.

Format (funded):

“This research was funded by [FUNDER NAME], [COUNTRY], under Grant/Project No. [GRANT NUMBER].”

Where a funder or sponsor had a role in the study design, data collection, analysis, interpretation of results, preparation of the manuscript, or decision to submit the work for publication, that role must be clearly disclosed.

Format (no specific funding):

“This research received no specific grant from any funding agency in the public, commercial, or not-for-profit sectors.”

Author Contributions (CRediT)

REQUIRED for ALL manuscripts.

Authors must provide an author-contribution statement using the standard CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) described in Section B3.2. The statement should accurately identify the contribution(s) made by each author.

Example:

“A.B.: Conceptualization, Methodology, Writing – original draft. C.D.: Data curation, Formal analysis, Visualization. E.F.: Supervision, Funding acquisition, Writing – review and editing.”

The contribution statement does not replace the journal's authorship requirements. All listed authors must meet the authorship criteria specified in Section B3.1.

Data Availability Statement

REQUIRED for ALL manuscripts.

All manuscripts must include a Data Availability Statement describing the availability of the data underlying the research.

Authors must select and complete the statement that most accurately reflects the status of their data using the applicable standardised format provided in Section B5.1.

Where data are publicly available, authors should provide the repository name and persistent identifier, URL, or DOI. Where data are restricted or obtained from a third party, the applicable restrictions and, where possible, information on how the data may be accessed must be provided.

Declaration of AI Use in Writing

All manuscripts must include a declaration regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) or AI-assisted technologies in manuscript preparation, in accordance with the journal's AI policy in Section B15.

The disclosure must identify the tool used, including the version where available, describe the purpose and scope of its use, and confirm that the authors reviewed the AI-assisted content and accept full responsibility for the final manuscript.

Format (AI used):

“The authors used [TOOL NAME], version [X, if available], for [SPECIFIC PURPOSE, e.g., language editing, grammar checking, translation, or assistance in drafting text]. The authors reviewed and edited the AI-assisted content and take full responsibility for the accuracy and integrity of the final manuscript.”

Format (AI not used):

“No AI writing-assistance tools were used in the preparation of this manuscript.”

AI tools cannot be listed as authors.

References

NRIAG Journal of Astronomy and Geophysics uses the Harvard Author-Date reference style. References must be complete, accurate, and consistently formatted. All sources cited in the text must appear in the reference list, and all entries in the reference list must be cited in the text.

Where available, authors should include persistent identifiers, particularly DOIs, for referenced publications and datasets. Authors are responsible for ensuring the accuracy and verifiability of all references cited in their manuscripts.

Citation Integrity Requirements

Authors must ensure that references are selected on the basis of their relevance and scientific value. Citation practices must not be used to artificially influence citation metrics or provide inappropriate advantage to particular authors, journals, institutions, or research groups.

Authors must avoid:

  • Excessive self-citation: Citing one's own previous work without clear scientific relevance or justification.

  • Citation manipulation: Adding references primarily or solely to increase the citation counts or metrics of a particular author, group, institution, or journal.

  • Coercive citation: Editors and reviewers must not require authors to add citations that are not scientifically relevant to the manuscript as a condition of consideration or acceptance.

  • Inappropriate citation of retracted literature: Retracted publications must not be cited as valid scientific evidence. Where a retracted work is cited because the retraction itself or the history of the work is relevant to the discussion, its retracted status must be clearly identified.

Figures, Tables, and Images

Technical Requirements

Element Requirement Format
Line art / graphs Must be clear and legible at the intended publication size, with readable labels, symbols, and axis titles. High-quality raster or vector format accepted by the submission system
Photographs / scientific images Must have sufficient resolution and quality to preserve scientifically relevant details. High-quality image format accepted by the submission system
Combination figures Text, images, symbols, and graphical elements must remain clear and legible at publication size. High-quality raster or vector format accepted by the submission system
Colour figures Colours must be used consistently and should remain interpretable when viewed electronically and, where practicable, by readers with colour-vision deficiencies. Format accepted by the submission system
Tables Must be editable, numbered consecutively, appropriately titled, cited in the text, and include units where applicable. Editable table, not an image
Figure legends Each figure must have a clear legend that allows the figure to be understood with minimal reference to the main text. Provided in the manuscript file

Image Integrity Policy

All images, spectra, maps, graphs, and other visual representations of scientific data must accurately represent the underlying observations, data, or results. Image processing and visualization procedures that are scientifically appropriate and routinely used in the relevant field are permitted, provided that they do not alter, obscure, remove, or misrepresent scientifically relevant information.

Permitted adjustments may include uniform changes to brightness, contrast, intensity scaling, colour mapping, or other visualization parameters applied consistently to the relevant image or dataset. Where such processing could affect interpretation, the procedures used must be appropriately described in the Methods section and/or figure legend.

The selective addition, removal, concealment, relocation, or alteration of features in an image or other visual representation of scientific data is not permitted unless scientifically justified, clearly disclosed, and appropriately documented. Combining images or data from different sources, experiments, acquisition periods, or processing steps must be clearly indicated and described where relevant.

Authors must retain the original, unprocessed data or image files and provide them to the journal upon reasonable request for editorial or research-integrity assessment.

Supplementary Materials

Authors may submit supplementary materials, including additional figures, tables, datasets, code, expanded methods, animations, or other materials that provide relevant support for the manuscript. Supplementary materials that form part of the submission may be considered during peer review and must meet the same standards of scientific integrity, accuracy, ethics, and transparency as the main manuscript.

Supplementary materials must be clearly labelled and numbered, where applicable (e.g., Supplementary Figure S1, Supplementary Table S1), cited appropriately in the main manuscript, and submitted as separate files in formats supported by the journal's online submission system.

Supplementary materials should complement rather than replace information necessary to understand the principal methods, results, and conclusions of the article.

For large datasets, software, or other research outputs that are better suited to external preservation and reuse, authors are encouraged to deposit the material in an appropriate recognised disciplinary, institutional, or general-purpose repository and provide the persistent identifier or DOI in the manuscript and Data Availability Statement, where applicable.
